The type of rock formed through the cooling and solidification of magma is called igneous rock. These rocks can form either extrusively, when magma erupts as lava from a volcano and cools quickly, or intrusively, when magma cools slowly underground. Common examples include granite (intrusive) and basalt (extrusive).
