The process by which cells obtain energy from glucose in the absence of oxygen is called anaerobic respiration. This process allows cells to generate ATP through the partial breakdown of glucose molecules without requiring oxygen. Anaerobic respiration is less efficient than aerobic respiration, yielding fewer ATP molecules per glucose molecule. It occurs in certain microorganisms and during strenuous exercise in animals, where oxygen supply may be limited, leading to the production of lactate or ethanol.
