The Soul City project in North Carolina aimed to create an integrated, self-sufficient community focused on addressing issues of poverty and racial inequality. Launched in the 1960s by civil rights activist Floyd McKissick, the project was envisioned as a model for urban renewal and economic development in minority communities. While it received initial support and attracted attention, including federal funding, it faced numerous challenges, such as financial difficulties and political opposition. Ultimately, Soul City did not achieve its ambitious goals and was unable to sustain itself as a vibrant community. Nonetheless, it served as an early example of grassroots efforts to combat systemic inequality and the complexities of such initiatives.
