The form of government established in France after the revolution of 1789 was the First French Republic. Following years of social and political upheaval, the monarchy was abolished, marking the end of Louis XVI's reign. The National Assembly proclaimed the Republic in 1792, leading to the establishment of new political structures and ideologies. However, the initial ideals of the revolution, including liberty, equality, and fraternity, faced challenges amid internal and external conflicts, resulting eventually in the rise of the Directory and later in Napoléon Bonaparte’s rise to power and establishment of the Consulate.
