The gas most commonly used for refrigeration is hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs), as they are efficient and effective refrigerants. HFCs have largely replaced chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs), which were found to deplete the ozone layer. Despite their efficiency, HFCs are potent greenhouse gases, raising concerns about their environmental impact. Consequently, there is an ongoing shift towards more environmentally friendly alternatives, like hydrocarbons and natural refrigerants.
