The largest land predator in the world is the polar bear (Ursus maritimus). Adult males can weigh between 900 to 1,600 pounds or more and stand around 8 to 10 feet tall when on their hind legs. Polar bears are well-adapted to cold environments, with a thick layer of blubber and a dense fur coat that insulates them against Arctic temperatures. They primarily hunt seals on sea ice and have an exceptional sense of smell, allowing them to detect prey from miles away. Due to climate change and habitat loss, polar bears are considered vulnerable and face significant threats to their survival.
