The largest island in the world is Greenland. It has an area of approximately 2.16 million square kilometers (836,331 square miles), making it significantly larger than the next largest island, New Guinea. Greenland is an autonomous territory within the Kingdom of Denmark and is largely covered by an ice sheet, which makes its landscape predominantly glaciated. The island's sparse population primarily inhabits the coastal regions, with the majority residing in the capital city, Nuuk. Despite its name, much of Greenland's land is icy and inhospitable, with the interior being virtually uninhabited.
