The largest coral reef system in the world is the Great Barrier Reef. Located off the coast of Queensland, Australia, it stretches over 2,300 kilometers (1,430 miles) and consists of approximately 2,900 individual reefs and 900 islands. Covering an area of around 344,400 square kilometers (133,000 square miles), the Great Barrier Reef is not only a UNESCO World Heritage Site but also home to an incredibly diverse array of marine life, including thousands of species of fish, corals, and other marine organisms.
