The capital city of Belize is Belmopan. Established in 1970, Belmopan was designed to serve as the new capital following the devastation caused by Hurricane Hattie in 1961, which severely impacted the former capital, Belize City. Located inland and away from the coast, Belmopan is smaller than Belize City but serves as the political center of the country. The city contains government buildings, including the National Assembly and the Prime Minister's office. Belmopan is also known for its proximity to various natural attractions, such as the Belize Zoo and the nearby cave systems.
