General category candidates are permitted a total of six attempts for the UPSC examination. However, if they still do not succeed in qualifying after exhausting their attempts, they must re-evaluate their preparation strategies and may choose to further their studies or gain more experience. The attempts are counted until a candidate reaches the designated age limit for eligibility.
